Still need a costume? Go as a librarian! But not a stodgy, shushy type of librarian. A cool librarian. Your humble blogkeeper suggests the following:
Batgirl – Remember: Barbara Gordon, A.K.A. Batgirl, was a librarian. Invaluable research assistance by day, butt kicker by night. And in modern comic book continuity, though Barbara’s Batgirl career was ended by an injury that left her in a wheelchair, she continues to help fight crime as Oracle, a sort of information broker to the superhero crowd. Now, Batman goes to her for help. How awesome is that?
Rupert Giles – From Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Giles was a librarian and helped to train/mentor the title character. Also: great singing voice. And British. All of these are good things.
Rex Libris – Title character of a fun comic book published by Amaze Ink/Slave Labor Graphics. From the book’s website:
“Follow the story of Rex Libris, the tough-as-nails Head Librarian at Middleton Public Library, and his unending struggle against the forces of darkness. Wearing his distinctive, super thick bottle glasses and armed with an arsenal of powerful weapons, he strikes fear into recalcitrant borrowers, and can take on virtually any foe‹from noisy, loitering zombies to fleeing alien warlords who refuse to pay their late fees. Nowhere is beyond his reach, thanks to the use of teleportation crystals (powered with pseudo- science) capable of instantly transporting Rex to the farthest corners of the universe. Even the occasional infestation of rogue, public domain literary characters in the library are dispatched with aplomb. With fists of steel and mind as sharp as a tack, Rex is a true guardian of knowledge, foe of the foolish, defender of the Dewey Decimal System, and the best hope for the future of civilization.”
All you need is a suit, some Harry Potter-type glasses, and a really big fake gun (I recommend finding the biggest Nerf gun you can find, but that’s just me).
Yomiko Readman – Lead character from the anime and manga (for the uninitiated, Japanese cartoons and comics, respectively) series Read or Die (R.O.D.). Yomiko, also known as Agent Paper, is a field agent for the British Library, which in this story, is as much a covert law enforcement agency as actual library. Good choice for you Japanese comics/animation fans out there, and pretty easy to pull together, even at the last minute.
Zombie Librarian – Come on… who doesn’t like zombies? And since you can turn just about any type of character you can imagine into a zombie, why not a librarian? You can shuffle around, moaning about books instead of brains. “Mmmmmaaaaahhhh… overdue!”
