Locating company and industry financial ratios

Standard

Need to locate a company’s financial ratios and then compare these to the benchmark ratios for the industry?  Several library databases can help.  Use the Mergent Online database to locate company ratios.  Search the database by typing in the name or ticker symbol of your company, and then click on the company name.  From the retrieved page, click on the tab at the top labeled Company Financials.   On the retrieved page you will see the Ratios tab on the green band at the top of the page.  Click on this tab to retrieve 3 years of profitability, liquidity, debt management, and asset management ratios.  You can find historical ratios by selecting a broader date range from the drop down box located under the green menu.  Other sources for company ratios include Hoovers Academic (search by company name and click on the Competitive Landscape link on the left menu) and Value Line Research Center.  Since Value Line contains investment reports, the ratios relate to the profitability of the company.
Industry ratios, both current and historical, can be found in the RMA Annual Statement Studies.  Each annual volume of the Annual Statement Studies contains current industry ratios sorted by sales and by assets.  In the middle of an industry report you will find 5 years of historical ratios.  The entries in the book are arranged by NAICS industry code number.  Other places to look for industry ratios include Hoovers Academic (the competitive landscape link displayed with a company record will also contain ratios for the industry), First Research Industry Profiles located in Proquest Business Databases, Value Line industry reports, Industry Norms & Key Business Ratios (Print in Reference HF5681 .R25 I 5) and the Almanac of Business & Industrial Financial Ratios (Print in Reference HF5681 .R25 T68).  Bizstats has a limited amount of industry ratio analysis, as well as projected revenues for specific industries available for free on its website at http://www.bizstats.com/

A reference librarian will be glad to assist you in using any of the resources mentioned above for locating company and industry ratios.
