Locating information on international companies can be difficult if the searcher only has the company name in hand, but resources are available to save you time with your search. The chapter on company information in the book International Business Information: How to Find It, How to Use It is useful for developing a search strategy and locating sources of information. Start by verifying the existence of the company and any possible relationships the company may have with other international companies (i.e., is it a division, affiliate, or parent?). The Lexis/Nexis Corporate Affiliations, a print directory providing global company directory information, can help you quickly establish your company’s existence and corporate family status. This directory covers public and private non-U.S. companies with revenues in excess of $10 million. Another option is to search the Kompass Business-to-Business Directory, a free web locator for global product and service providers covering 3 million companies worldwide. Kompass can be searched by product/service, company name, executive name, and SIC industry code number. Once you’ve established directory information on your company, try the following databases to look for additional financial information on the company:
Mergent’s International Company Database contains data on 20,000 non-U.S. companies (active and inactive), covering 95% of non-U.S. global market capitalization. The International Company Database (inactive) provides financial information on non-U.S. companies that have merged, were acquired, went bankrupt, liquidated or disappeared from 1995 forward.
Select the Corporate Manual Search option and from the drop down box, the International Manuals. Searches can be run for information and financial data from 1909 through 2009. Reported information includes corporate histories, business descriptions, and financial data–including data on corporate bond issues, dividends issued and stock splits.
Lexis/Nexis Academic. Companies tab. Company Profiles File.
Select the International Company Reports to locate company profiles on more than 30,000 companies from Asia and the Pacific Rim, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and North and South America. The Worldscope International Company Profiles contains financial profiles, fundamental analysis, and stock performance data for over 28,000 companies. Standardized data across companies facilitates company comparisons.
